About RinkAtlas

The RinkAtlas hockey arena database has about 4,700 indoor arenas, pavilions, park rinks, and similar ice hockey and ice skating facilities located throughout North America. RinkAtlas was founded by Dave Aiello in 2006.

  • RinkAtlas is a mobile-first, geolocation-based website.  In other words, RinkAtlas is intended to run well on your smartphone or tablet (not just your desktop or notebook computer), and it shows you a list of nearby arenas to your current location.
  • RinkAtlas features good arena photography. This helps you have a better sense of the arenas that you visit.  Because it’s impossible for anyone to visit all 5,000 North American hockey arenas quickly, I used a Kickstarter campaign to crowdsource photos of arenas throughout North America.
  • RinkAtlas helps you find information and services that you need while on the road.  RinkAtlas provides lists of restaurants, bars, coffee places, and gas stations from Yelp in the vicinity of every arena, so you know where to stop either before or after the game. In the winter, weather is a critical element for traveling members of the hockey community.  So RinkAtlas provides a 7-day weather forecast from DarkSky for the area around every arena in our directory.

  • History.
    • The Prototype. RinkAtlas was a labor of love web project that began as a Google Maps mashup designed for use on desktop computers.  RinkAtlas provided the most accurate driving directions to U.S. arenas in the time before the iPhone and Android phones became ubiquitous.
    • The Mobile Era. It took a long time to come up with the design for RinkAtlas that made sense in the mobile era. But once we came up with that design, centered around the experience of seeing a game, we asked our closest friends for feedback, and launched our Kickstarter.
