Nazareth Ice Oasis in SF Bay Area May Close Permanently, Facing Up to $3M in Required Upgrades

The San Mateo Daily Journal reported on September 12 that Nazareth Ice Oasis may close permanently. The article says Nazareth Enterprises, a real estate development company, is in talks to sell the underlying property.

Nazareth Ice Oasis, located in Redwood City, California, on the San Francisco Peninsula, is said to require “updates to the roof, plumbing and floorboards” to come up to the local building code as well as “millions in updates to the ice refrigeration system.”

The article goes on to say that a law suit against the facility apparently resulted in an order to bring the facility to up compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The owners reportedly said that the required improvements will cost between $1 and $3 million.

The owners also own Nazareth Ice Oasis San Mateo, which is operating.

Nazareth Enteprises saved Nazareth Ice Oasis from closure in 2008. According to Nazareth’s website, “The Nazareth Ice Oasis was born out of community outcry to save their ice rink. In 2008, with the ice rink financially struggling and on the brink of closing, Nazareth Enterprises stepped in, undertook a comprehensive financial restructure and invested in a complete remodel of the facilities, saving the beloved Redwood City ice rink.”
