New Ice Rink in East Brunswick, NJ On The Drawing Board

CentralJersey.com reported yesterday that The East Brunswick Township Council approved a resolution calling for architectural designs for a proposed ice rink to be created by collaboration between DMR Associates and the municipality.

It is not clear what company the article referred to, but it’s possible that it means DMR Architects of Hasbrouck Heights, NJ which has a history of building a wide variety of public facilities as well as site planning in the State of New Jersey.

The proposed location, 110 Tices Lane, East Brunswick, a short distance from New Jersey Route 18 and very close to Exit 9 of the New Jersey Turnpike. This is the site of a former Wonder Bread bakery. The bakery building was demolished in the summer of 2019.

According to the article, “At present, the proposed scope of services is based on an approximately 205 feet by 85 feet ice hockey rink. Per the township’s discussion with the company on Aug. 3, the township wishes to proceed with the programming and concept design services only to establish the building footprint so the plan application for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection can be submitted.”

East Brunswick Councilman James Wendell said, “The town is going to use the 8 acres for a facility that is going to benefit the entire town. Right now we are thinking about an ice rink … and we’ll have some retail residential units, we’ll have some townhouses, we’ll have some apartments, all with smart development and improvements to Tices Lane and improvements to the infrastructure in the area.”
