Morgantown Ice Arena Repairs Approved, City Scrapes Money Together

WAJR reported repairs to Morgantown Ice Arena were approved by the Morgantown Board of Parks and Recreation (BOPARC). This appears to clear the way for an important local ice arena in Northern West Virginia to open for the 2020-2021 season.

The article indicates that BOPARC pulled together money previously earmarked for other purposes to make the necessary repairs possible, but they intend to ask the city government for $10,000 to “temporarily open the facility”.

The plan for Morgantown Ice Arena was to perform a multi-million dollar renovation of the facility, but that has been delayed due to COVID-19 and the associated budget shortfall. The $15,000 in repairs are to do emergency fixes to “the desiccant wheel, or rotary dehumidifier, chiller switch and valve” which were all scheduled to be replaced.

In spite of BOPARC finding the money to do these repairs, the arena probably cannot open until December at the earliest. This adds further disruption for organizations like Morgantown Hockey Association, who has seven teams who use the arena as their home ice.
